The DJI Osmo: How does it hold up for a travel shoot?

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

This past fall, I found myself having an experience of a lifetime. Being a producer for a travel sow, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan for a couple of weeks to shoot scenes for the pilot. It was a very fast paced production, and I used a small camera, the new DJI Osmo with the pro pack. A pro pack includes a camera on a gimbal two lenses and a wireless microphone pack. Here are my impressions of the DJI Osmo:

First Impressions

The DJI Osmo camera system is very sleek, lightweight, and easy to travel with. The image quality and sound quality were comparable to any full size camera at a fraction of the size and weight. It was extremely easy to use and made for an easy set up which on a run-and-gun show like the we are producing, it was the ideal camera for the job.

How did I push it to its limits?

This camera was a great tool for this production, the easy set up was ideal. With the capability of sooting in 4K and the wire less mic pack you are capable of capturing an awesome image and great sound. While shooting in Japan I really put this camera to the test by using it for very long hours at a moments notice in very crowed tight spaces. The fact that it's compact allowed me to get into tight and crowed places with out drawing any attention to myself.

Pros and Cons

The size and weight of this camera is definitely an advantage on any run and gun shoot. It is capable of sooting in 4-K and the sound come through very clear. This camera pro pack includes the camera on a gimbal, two lenses and a wireless mic pack. The only thing I didn't like was the small monitor screen on the unit. Even though there is an adapter for a smart phone it would be nice for the monitor to be bigger. For your shoots, I recommend you use your phone for a bigger monitor. It also has a follow mode, allowing you to place the camera and a stationary position and you can walk across in front of it and it’ll follow you. This camera package cost me $550 at Best Buy.

The Final Score

Being in production for over five years as allowed me to use many different cameras for varies projects. For the price and size this camera package gives any full size camera a run for its money. I highly recommend for any one that needs to run and gun set up and give it a 5 star rating.
